As a guest of Institute of European Civilization and the College of History and Culture, professor QIAN Chengdan from Peking University guided the “Education and Communication of Scholars” Activity.

Firstly, combined with the experience of history study for decades, professor QIAN pointed out that sometimes there were many chances and coincidences influenced choice making, and many choices were not suitable for one specific person. Once you had chosen a certain direction, you should stick to it. Professor QIAN also pointed out, as it had been nearly 40 years since the “Reform and Open up”, from the perspective of World History Discipline, we should have our own arguments, understandings, and conclusions instead of just leaving our study on foreign countries at the level of knowing. Fact is the foundation of historical research and judgment. Therefore, we should do our history study with the attitude of honest and let evidences speak. Professor QIAN believed that we should choose the topic connected with the concerns and interests of Chinese People, form our own research perspective on foreign countries, and express them in our own way of understanding.

Besides, professor QIAN also gave scrupulous guidance to some teachers on the writing of textbooks, the way to explore new research fields in the future, and the way to find core areas of their research field. Everyone gained various inspirations from professor QIAN’s academic experience and benefited a lot.

“Education and Communication of Scholars” Activity is a specialized activity advocated and organized by professor HOU Jianxin for the purpose of promoting the healthy development of young and middle-aged scholars. Its key point is to make young scholars “become a good person and do well in researching”. As professor HOU said, “Education and Communication of Scholars” Activity is the construction of soft power, which is related to the future development of scholar themselves and the academic team. Since the activity has been carrying out for about two years, it has achieved positive influence and provided a favorable platform for the ideological interchange of young and middle-aged scholars.
