Research Interests

Professor Meng is mainly engaged in human geography, economic geography, spatial planning and German human geography research. His main research interests focus on the theory and practice of free economiczones, regional planning and policy, and German economic geography. Since the 1980s, he has hosted more than 20 research projects such as the National Social Science Fundation, the National Natural Science Foundation, the Key Project of Tianjin social science, and Sino-German Cooperation project. His research topics cover basic and applied study, domestic and international cooperation,especially core issues related to national and regional development policy. Among them, the theory and practice of free trade zone, Tianjin Binhai New Area development plan, comparative study on Sino-German spatial planning, rural urbanization development theory and case study have great academic and practical value. At present, he has published more than 50 papers in Acta Geographica Sinica, Chinese Geographical Science, Die Erde, and Transnational Corporation and so on. In 2003, the English monograph "The Theory and Practice of Free Economic Zones" was collected by Harvard University, Heidelberg University, Germany and other internationally well-known universities, and was used by many scholars in Europe and America as the reference books to economics, economic geography and political science study.

Education

Professor Meng Guangwen graduated from the Department of Geography at Tianjin Normal University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1988, he graduated from the Department of Geography at Tianjin Normal University and obtained a Master of Science degree in Geography from Northeast Normal University. From May 1996 to December 2002, he has received his Ph.D. in the Department of Geography at University of Heidelberg,Germany.

Professional Experience:

From November 1993 to April 1996, as a visiting scholar, Professor Meng Guangwen was sent by the Ministry of Education of China to the University of Tübingen in Germany for academic exchanges. From January 2003 to December 2005, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Departmentof Geography of Heidelberg University.

Professional Affiliations:

Professor Meng is currently a member of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, a standing director of Economic Geography Research Association, a member of the Economic Geography Committee of the Chinese Geographical Society.
